Zack and Miri Make a Porno - 2008 - Kevin Smith

In a lot of ways Zack and Miri Make a Porno is the culmination of all of Kevin Smith's work thus far in his career. Take two parts Clerks vulgarity and one part Jersey Girl sweetness and you get Zack and Miri. This is a paint by numbers romantic comedy. Luckily for us they are Smith's numbers and he knows how to to paint them well. There are quite a few laugh out loud moments as well as a couple genuinely touching ones. The biggest problem with the film comes from Smith's over written script. At his best Kevin Smith is an excellent witter but, here it feels like he had a check list with things that must be in a Kevin Smith film and that got in the way. Script issues aside, Zack and Miri is a first rate comedy with a perfect cast. Seth Rogen is at his best as Zack while Elizabeth Banks solid as Miri but the real gems come from the supporting cast. Craig Robinson is the funniest actor working today. Justin Long as Brandon is worth the price of admission and Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes and even porn star Katie Morgan are all pitch perfect. The meta style ending is a take it or leave it move that was so sweet it hurt my teeth.
