My Week 02/16 - 02/22

Last Year at Marienbad - 1961 - Alain Resnais
Do you remember?

Leviathan - 2012 - Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel
No narrative to speak of but the film making on display is unique. A rare thing these days. I guess this is the type of thing that could only come from a place like the Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab.

Senso - 1954 - Luchino Visconti
A story of illicit love set during the Italian revolution. Told from the female perspective for a change.

The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums - 1939 - Kenji Mizoguchi
A tale of love, sacrifice and suffering. The son of a great actor sets out on his own to become great in his own right. His wife is there to support him no matter the cost. I loved the camera work here. We are kept at a distance through the entire film. Often seeing the action through doorways or windows.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - 2011 - Tomas Alfredson
A trifle of a movie but Oldman is very good. The spy action thriller done with less action and more talking.

Loups=Garous - 2010 - Junichi Fujisaku
Saw this listed by a few people on Letterboxd and decided to give it a look. The plot is all over the place and not in a good way. In the near future Big Brother has taken over even more than now, cameras everywhere, security robots, synthetic food everything one could ask for in a nice dystopia. The city appears to be run completely by one company and populated mostly with high school kids. Then the murders start.

Maelstrom - 2000 - Denis Villeneuve
Opening with a talking fish and closing with a talking fish, we see the life of a young woman fall apart after a couple of life chaging events.

Snowpiercer - 2013 - Bong Joon Ho
Behind all of the allegory the is a fun action movie. Mix in with all the messages about society and human nature we get the best guy with a weapon making his way down a hallway since Oldboy but with an ax instead of hammer.

Clean, Shaven - 1993 - Lodge Kerrigan
The use of sound to give us a glimpse into the mind of a paranoid schizophrenic is amazing and terrifying.

Best of the Week: The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums - 1939 - Kenji Mizoguchi
