Thief - 1981 - Michael Mann
James Caan is Frank, a thief who is looking to get one more score so he can go straight. Frank get involved with the mob and finds that the family does not like to let people go. He does the job, but there are issues when he tries to get his money.
Thief was Michael Mann's first film and it lays the ground work for all that followed. While James Caan's performance and the focus on character harken back to the great films of the seventies, the action and style are all eighties. From the synth music to the fast cars much of the feel and tone of the film foreshadows what Mann would go on to do with Miami Vice. This is James Cann's best performance and one of the better debuts for a director.
