My Week 5/11 - 5/17

Hong Kong Godfather - 1985 - Wang Lung Wei
Shaw Brothers do triad action and it does not really work out. It does have a cool last action scene and Norman Chu has a perm/rat tail hairstyle that should have gotten this movie censored.

The Driller Killer - 1979 - Abel Ferrara
Abel Ferrara's first feature film is as gritty and violent as the works that he has become know for. A struggling New York artist begins killing vagrants on the streets at night, with a drill. In time he moves on to more satisfying victims. The atmosphere is amazing. Late 70's punk and grimy old New York.

Ms .45 - 1981 - Abel Ferrara
A young mute seamstress in New York has a bad afternoon where she is attacked and raped twice in short succession. Understandably her way of coping is to pick up a .45 calibre pistol and start killing men.

Blackhat - 2015 - Michael Mann
A fine movie but not up to the Mann standard. A Michael Mann movie lives or dies on the professionalism of the main characters and that is lacking in Blackhat. Only Elias (Ritchie Coster) feels like a charater in a Mann movie. Hemsworth is fine, if a little miscast, as a Kevin Mitnick-esque hacker let out of jail to help the government track down a hacker after an attack on a nuclear power plant in China.
The film looks good, if you are a fan of the Mann digital style.

Best of the Week: Ms .45 - 1981 - Abel Ferrara
