My Week 4/27 - 5/03

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - 2014 - Ana Lily Amirpour
Amirpour's first feature feels like a modern version of a low budget seventies Italian horror western with an Iranian twist. Italy provides the temple for the look and story while Iran provides the characters and political sub text.

The Sheik - 2014 - Igal Hecht
The rise, fall, and rise again of the the Iron Sheik. He went from an amateur wrestling star in Iran to a pro wrestling star in the US to crack addict to Twitter superstar.

Another Earth - 2011 - Mike Cahill
The "what ifs?" in life actualize themselves in the form of a copy of the Earth. Science fiction trappings aside, the majority of the movie is about coping with guilt and grief. What can people do to help each other after a tragedy, what should they do.
Incidentally the same exact thing, a copy of Earth appearing in the sky, was used by Marvel Comics to kick off their major event for 2015.

The November Man - 2014 - Roger Donaldson
A mix between Bond and Bourne but not many of the good parts. It is like the movie Twins, this is the Danny DeVito.

Genius on Hold - 2012 - Gregory Marquette
Corporations team up with the government to hold down the little guy and hold back innovation. Walter Shaw was a gifted engineer but doing work for the mob because AT&T are kind of dicks is not something that makes for a sympathetic figure.

Tar Creek - 2009 - Matt Myers
The story of the nation's largest Superfund site. Natural resources are found, companies come in and extract said resources leaving behind a disaster. A hundred years ago it was mining for heavy metals and now it is hydraulic fracturing for oil and natural gas. We are not very good at the learn from history thing.

Red Hollywood - 1996 - Thom Andersen and Noël Burch
A look at Hollywood around the time of the red scare. No where near as good as Andersen's follow up, Los Angeles Plays Itself. Worth a look as a step in the career progression of a talented director.
