R.I.P. Setsuko Hara

Setsuko Hara made her last film over 50 years ago. After working for thirty years, during the war and into the post war rebuilding of Japan, she walked away from the screen and the fame. She was nicknamed The Eternal Virgin but the timing of her exit from public life, shortly after the death of Yasujirō Ozu, has lead to much speculation over the years.

Hara was also the inspiration for Satoshi Kon's masterpiece Millennium Actress.
