The Sun Also Rises - 1957 - Henry King

The 1957 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel about the lost generation suffers from the age old problems that come along with putting a great book on the screen. Famed producer Darryl Zanuck put together a cast that included Tyrone Power as the protagonist Jake Barnes along with Ava Gardner as Brett Ashley and the great Errol Flynn as Mike. The film works as overall as light entertainment but never lives up the transcendent source material. Not only is the film far surpassed by the book but, it may be more well known today as part of the back story of Robert Evans. Evans, along with the rest of us, realized that acting was not his calling and went on to head Paramount Studios and oversee the production of some of the studios most successful films including Love Story, The Godfather and Chinatown.
