My Week 03/16 - 03/22

All Good Things - 2010 - Andrew Jarecki
Dunst, Gosling and Langella all give fine performances. The movie is unremarkable on it's own but as the back story to The Jinx it is a must see. The fact that Robert Durst saw the film and though it would be a good idea to participate in a documentary with these people is amazing.

Only Lovers Left Alive - 2013 - Jim Jarmusch
Jarmusch and vampires may not be the most obvious combination but it works. Adam is a musician who is having trouble reconciling his desire to have is work heard and appreciated with his need to secluded away from society.

The Machinist - 2004 - Brad Anderson
Insomnia is great standing in for anything that can lead to mental breakdown in a character. Bale's weight loos for this role is impressive in a dangerous and unnecessary way.

Once Upon A Time In Shanghai - 2014 - Ching-Po Wong
A well done kung-fu action showcase. Shot with desaturated colours to enhance the 1930's setting. It is a remake of the 1972 film The Boxer From Shantung but I have not seen the original so I cannot make any comparisons.

Best of the Week: Only Lovers Left Alive - 2013 - Jim Jarmusch
