My Week 03/02 - 03/08

The One I Love - 2014 - Charlie McDowell
Saying nothing specific, this is a great film. The plot has many twists and turns but the giveaways start with the poster. This movie is best viewed with as little foreknowledge as possible and probably not with someone you are in a relationship with.

Blue Ruin - 2013 - Jeremy Saulnier
This revenge tale feels like Jeff Nichols crossed with Ben Wheatly. Violent and oppressive but with a sense of humor.

Beyond the Black Rainbow - 2010 - Panos Cosmatos
Style as substance. As pure head trip sci-fi that make the viewer either want to or feel like they have taken psychotropic drugs it is a great movie. If you are looking for something a little deeper I am pretty sure there is a phycosexual reading to be had. It is disappointing to not see anything upcoming on the director's IMDB page.

The Wolf of Wall Street - 2013 - Martin Scorsese
A bit of an empty movie but it does capture the tone of the book. Jordan Belfort had a lot of fun, made a lot of money, and served very little time.

Dirty Pretty Things - 2002 - Stephen Frears
A heavy-handed look at the lives of immigrants in London. Ejiofor is great as always and Frears is a talented director but the plot holds this one back. Having protagonists that are a superhero and an innocent victim along with a villain that should have had a mustache for twirling purposes in a message movie is a little much.

Grand Piano - 2013 - Eugenio Mira
Piano is serious business. Also a there was way too much Blackberry for something made in 2013.

Best of the Week: Beyond the Black Rainbow - 2010 - Panos Cosmatos
