My Week 04/13 - 04/19

Batman vs. Robin - 2015 - Jay Oliva
Based on the Court of Owls story line where billionaire Bruce Wayne must stop a group of other billionaires from taking control of the city from him. Basically the primary story is about how much of a hypocrite Batman is. Secondary there is discord in the Wayne household between Bruce and his son Damain. Overall well done but Kevin Conroy will always be the Batman for me.

God of Gamblers - 1989 - Jing Wong
Chow Yun-Fat, as always, is the coolest guy in the room. A gambler who always wins, no matter what the game and has a bit of a sweet tooth. Then he falls and hits his head and the hi-jinks begin. He is taken in by a couple of hoodlums that stubble upon his preternatural(magical?) gambling abilities and decide to use him to get rich.
Tonally this movie is all over the board going from slapstick gags to real stabby, shooty, and rapey. The violence needed to be a little more cartoony to keep with the rest of the film.

Costume designer Shirley Chan deserves a mention for coming up with the greatest letter jacket ever.
American Sports are the best!!!!!!!

Triads: The Inside Story - 1989 - Taylor Wong
A triad movie with a couple of twists. First, there are barely any guns, the violence is mostly knives and pipes. Second, Chow Yun-Fat is not a bad ass.

Force Majeure - 2014 - Ruben Östlund
Thematically similar to The Loneliest Planet but with kids this time.

Adrift in Tokyo - 2007 - Satoshi Miki
Two men, a debt collector and a college student he is collecting on, go walking in Tokyo. They run into several surreal situations until settling into a make shift family for a while but the happiness cannot last.
This film shows loneliness and melancholy in an irreverent light. The motivating action of the plot is extremely dark but the movie keeps a light tone.

Best of the Week: Adrift in Tokyo - 2007 - Satoshi Miki
