My Week 8/03 - 8/09

Jauja - 2014 - Lisandro Alonso
90 minute of an interesting film that turns amazing in the last 15 minutes. Whose point of view have we been seeing?

Los muertos - 2004 - Lisandro Alonso
A man journeys to reunite with his daughter after getting out of prison. Worth it for the opening scene.

Out of the Furnace - 2013 - Scott Cooper
Cooper pays homage to a couple of better films from the 70's.

Summer Interlude - 1951 - Ingmar Bergman
Summer lovin' happened so fast..

Center Stage - 1991 - Stanley Kwan
This is Maggie Cheung's film. The mix of biopic and behind the scenes documentary is ambitious for Kwan to try but without Cheung's captivating screen presence it would not work. This is more than just a great acting job, though it is that as well, Cheung is also the key to the documentary portions of the film working. She is not just playing Ruan Ling-yu, she is also playing Maggie Cheung and she needs to generate empathy for both.
The cross cutting of the farewell party and the people saying their goodbyes after Ruan's suicide is the greatest kind of melodrama. The line "If I could change you once more..." is heartbreaking.

Gossip is a fearful thing.
